Campione d'Italia
Campione d'Italia is an italian enclave, approximately 4 square km wide, on the eastern side of the Lugano lake, completely encircled from Swiss territory.
It is approximately ten kilometers far away from the swiss city Lugano, and 25 kilometers from Como.
Its origins go back to the donation that a longobard land owner, Totone, made to the monastery of Sant' Ambrogio in Milan in the 777. Feud of the church for more than thousand years, subsequently assigned, at the end of XVIII century, to the Lombardy and afterwards, with the Lombardy, to the new Reign of Italy.
In spite of being an Italian territory, Campione is swiss for the custom, so it is necessary therefore, in order to reach it, the passport or the identity card. Legal currency is indifferently Swiss franc and euro.
The town was once a village of fishermen, but today is a touristic locality, known most of all for the Casino and the sparkling vitality that the presence of the casino brings to the town.
Campione is the land of origin of craftsmen, become then architects, sculptors and painters, said - masters Campionesi-, which carried out an intense activity in Italy and abroad from the XII to the XIV century.
Santuario della Madonna dei Ghirli
It is the symbol of the town, is situated after the arc that marks the income in the campionese territory along the shore of the lake. This Sanctuary, that is called also "of the Madonna of the swallows", is characterized from one scenographic stairway that from the facade goes down tothe lake.
The building is guardian of numberless artistic treasures of campionese school.
The porch is valued by frescoes of the 1514 representing the Last Judgement, Hell and history of Adam and Eva, while the inside is decorated with paintings of the Virgin Mary and saints.
Casino Municipale
The casino, created in 1917, was inaugurated in 1933, becoming the fulcrum and the motor of the locality, that today has nearly 3000 inhabitants, of which beyond 18% working at the Casino,in the rooms of the roulette, baccarat, trente et quarante, black jack and slot machines.
It is open every day (with the exception of 24 and 25 December) from 15,30 to 2.30.
To enter it is indispensable to have an identity document.
Inside the Casino, a restaurant with splendid terrace on the lake, where an international kitchen can be tasted, accompanied from notes of the best piano players and the most famous orchestras.
In the Party Hall, apart from concerts and conventions, gala with recital of international stars and prestigious shows are organized.
